Introducing Gender, Equity and Social Inclusion Unit (GESI), MAB: Role model to inclusive development

Over the years, Bangladesh has made impressive progress on eradicating poverty, and enhancing human development. Yet various forms of exclusion, particularly associated with gender, persist.

As such, comprehensive action on mainstreaming gender equality and social inclusion is essential to uphold the overall development scenario of Bangladesh

 

Gender Equity and Social Inclusion GESI

Municipal Association of Bangladesh (MAB) raising voice for inclusive policies and focuses on increasing the power of the excluded, women and the low-income people. Keeping this in focus and also to enhance the institutional capacity of MAB, the “Gender Equity and Social Inclusion Unit (GESI)” at MAB Secretariat has been established in 2019,  so that, this thematic  unit could function as technical think tank to create enabling environment for addressing Gender and Inclusiveness for improving the Total services of Municipalities, and to establish social justice as well.

 

Objective of Gender, Equity and Social Inclusion Unit  

To support and act as Technical advisory role for MAB to bring positive changes in regulations, and adding values for enhancing gender equity and to address social inclusiveness.

GESI is consists of in total 25 members where there are both 20 % male and 80% female are from Mayors, Councilors, Staffs from different municipalities. Also to enhance the participation of  women leaders in policy advocacy are key areas of GESI functions.

 

Functions of GESI Unit will  reflecting on the following:

 

  1. Local Govt. Act (Pourashava) 2009, related rules, circulars, memos and the process of legal review to mainstreaming gender and inclusiveness for women inclusion, empowerment and leadership at national, regional and international level.
  2. Special focus on girls Education, Women health care for mother and newborn, Role of relevant departments within Municipality areas.
  3. Adoption of CWIS concept in urban sanitation and for inclusive sanitation governance for the enhancement of women leadership in sanitation sector for achieving SDG 6.2
  4. Women leadership for ensuring an inclusive society
  5. Access to resource for low income community with safeguarding equity
